Oak Tree Recovers Via Reiki

It's true! Milton Keynes Today reports that an ailing city centre oak tree that responded to no other therapies is showing signs of health after a group of area healers started giving it some Reiki.

According to the paper, "The once-mighty oak's decline had left experts stumped for months. They had tried a remarkable catalogue of remedies ranging from tonics and massage to biopsies and even amputation of branches. But nothing failed to stop the tree shedding its leaves and looking more wilted by the day."

One local landscaper came, xrayed the tree and said that the problem could be overwatering (which has killed many of my houseplants) or root compression. They will be donating a Terraventing treatment, where they blast air around the roots to create more space.

The other people who got involved were a group of local Reiki healers who "held a mass healing session to channel positive energy into its depleted branches. 'The Reiki may well have worked. Who knows?' said Martin [the complex manager]. 'The tree is definitely looking a little better and we are cautiously optimistic about its prospects.'"

Reiki Helps Cyclist Win Silver Olympic Medal

On Saturday night New Zealand cyclist Hayden Roulston won a silver medal in the men's individual pursuit. Roulston came in second to reigning world champion Bradley Wiggins of Britain. According to Stuff.co.nz, "For Roulston, 27, it marked the end of a bumpy journey which included two brushes with law and a health scare that had forced him into early retirement."

About 2 years ago his doctors told him to stop competing lest he aggravate a heart condition. Roulston didn't listen. Instead he tried Reiki healing, which he credits for keeping his heart healthy and getting him to Beijing. He believes in it so much that he vrought his Reiki practitioner with him to China, in the same way that others may bring in a Pilates teacher or personal trainer.

Hey, Reiki works!

Reiki for Rini the Tiger

Meet Rini, an 18 year old white tigress living in Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal. On May 10, 2008 Rini underwent surgery to remove a malignant mole from under her eye. While Western veterinarians advised park officials to put Rini down, they opted instead for an interesting blend of chemotherapy and Reiki.

According to A K Bhattacharya, director of the park as interviewed by Down To Earth, Rini's advanced age combined with the fact that hers "is the first case of cancer being diagnosed in a big cat in captivity and her undergoing chemotherapy and reiki,” does not give anyone high hopes for Rini's long term survival. Mamta Jain and her cousins have been giving reiki to the tigress for six weeks, having sought special permission from the park to try the alternative therapy to ease her pain. Jain claims “the tigress seems to be accepting reiki well. She seems relaxed.”

Energy Healing Stimulates Cellular Growth!

Finally some laboratory research shows that Reiki and other energy healing practices really do promote physical changes at the cellular level! The study was overseen by Dr. Gloria Gronowicz at University of Connecticut. She is the last person you'd expect to put stock in energy medicine until she saw it with her own eyes, under a high-power microscope in her own laboratory. "Therapeutic Touch performed by trained energy healers significantly stimulated the growth of bone and tendon cells in lab dishes."

Over the course of three years energy workers came to the lab and gave energy healing to petri dishes of bone cells (bone cells are Gronowicz's research speciality) for 10 minutes at a time twice a week. There were three dishes involved in each event-one dish of cells treated by a trained healer, one treated by untrained students who were instructed to hold their hands over a petri dish for 10 minutes twice a week, and a third dish that stood ignored in its metal stand. The examining scientists did not know which group each dish had been in.

"To Gronowicz's astonishment, the cells treated by trained Therapeutic Touch practitioners grew faster and stronger than those that received the sham treatment, or none at all....In addition to seeing increased cell division under the microscope, the bone cell cultures treated with Therapeutic Touch also absorbed more calcium, the essential mineral for growing strong bones. Her findings were published in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research and The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine."

Interestingly enough, energy healing done on bone cancer cells in petri dishes under the same conditions produced no changes in the cells. It only worked on healthy tissue. So, to those of you who doubt us energy healers, Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

My Distance Reiki Experience

Today I sent my answers to Alice, and here they are...

1. Please describe a bit about your experiences so far with distance healing.
I am a member of several on line communities where we exchange reiki regularly and put out calls for friends who need healing. This is more like joining a massive healing, so I have never received lots of feedback. With individuals I have sent reiki several times, and most people who respond tell me that they felt calmer or warmer during the sending and that it helped their pain or anxiety. I would like to do more regulated sending (if that's the right word) like I did with you, Alice, so as to get better a clearer feedback.

2. Have you ever received feedback on a distance healing, and if so, was it favorable?
I guess I answered this above :-). I have and yes, it was favorable.

3. What do you think challenges you about distance healing?
It's harder for me to believe it's really happening. Reiki is something I chose because I experience the effects of it, even though I don't always quite know why it's working. So the distance thing is just harder for my western philosophical brain to wrap around.

4. Have you ever received a distance healing from another energy healer?
Yes, and distance attunements from you and my friend Jane Young in Spain.

5. If you've done distance healing before, what techniques did you use to send it?
First I used standard Usui Reiki Ryoho with HSZSN and sending. After we did the KR attunements I began to just focus and send without symbols.

6. What would you like to work on for your own growth in distance healing?
More focus on what exactly is happening, what to think about, more practice with guidance and feedback.

7. Why did you decide to sign up for this distance healing tutorial?
I was drawn to your blog, loved your approach (which coming from a Jewish perspective seems similar in many ways to mine), and felt that you could help me get this better.

Reiki Questions

Now I have the questions from Alice regarding my distance healing background.

1. Please describe a bit about your experiences so far with distance healing.
2. Have you ever received feedback on a distance healing, and if so, was it favorable?
3. What do you think challenges you about distance healing?
4. Have you ever received a distance healing from another energy healer?
5. If you've done distance healing before, what techniques did you use to send it?
6. What would you like to work on for your own growth in distance healing?
7. Why did you decide to sign up for this distance healing tutorial?

When I answer her tomorrow I will post my thoughts.

Distance Reiki Tutorial

I am about to start my Distance Reiki Tutorial with Alice Langholt (the Reiki Master and fellow Jewish mother who did my Kundalini Reiki attunements and training). I have already received a book emailed as a pdf and a list of questions. As I did with my Kundalini Reiki experiences I will keep you posted on how this goes. As always, if you are interested in receiving free distance reiki healing to assist me with the process, leave a comment below!

Kundalini Reiki III Attunement

Today at 1pm (7 days after the KR II attunement) I had my Kundalini Reiki III attunement with Alice Langhorn. My experience:

I sat down around 12:57pm and closed my eyes. Within a few moments my forehead and hands began to heat up and vibrate. My lower spine began to vibrate and I felt waves of heat and energy from my tailbone up to my chest and shoulder blades. The colors I saw began at orange/red and then resolved into a deep royal blue. When I opened my eyes it was 1:14pm and the attunement was over.

Very intense!

I will report on my different healing experiences as they happen.

Distance Kundalini Reiki

Last night I did my first distance reiki sending since my Kundalini Reiki I & II attunements, sending some reiki to my teacher Alice Langholt in Ohio around 10pm. Here's what she had to say about it...

"The energy started for me about 10:04 pm, and I first felt it in my feet and hands. It stayed there, tingling nicely for a while, and then started moving up my legs to my knees. I felt the energy travel around my body, and up my arms too, and then I would feel it in my arms and legs again. It was interesting, kind of like waves moving back and forth, but not as overpowering - gentle. At 10:27 it stopped, but I felt the energy was ending, and as it did, it seemed to move down my legs to my feet and out my toes, as if it was draining out the way it came!

Very nice! Many thanks!"

What is interesting from my perspective is that it took all of 3-5 minutes for me to send this 23 minute treatment to Alice. I sent it from Turks & Caicos (a 3.5 hour flight). And I didn't need to use the Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen distance Usui Reiki symbol. So, if any of you are interested in a free distance healing session this weekend, please comment with your name, location, preferred time, time zone, and what you might like me to focus on and all I ask for in return is your feedback after so I know how it went.

Mind/Body Relaxation Affects Our Genes

Finally there appears to be some scientific quantifiable evidence that mind/body relaxation practices, such as meditation, deep breathing and prayer, do trigger a measurable "Relaxation Response". This phrase was coined 35 years ago by Herbert Benson, MD, director emeritus of the Benson-Henry Institute and co-senior author (along with Towia Libermann, PhD, director of the BIDMC Genomics Center) of a recent PloS One Journal report of a research study which found that "eliciting the relaxation response – a physiologic state of deep rest – influences the activation patterns of genes associated with the body’s response to stress."

The study's Phase One looked first at the gene expression patterns of 19 long-term practitioners of different relaxation response techniques alongside those of 19 individuals who had never engaged in such practices. Then, in Phase Two the 19 control participants went through an 8-week relaxation practice training program.

"Both phases of the study indicated that the relaxation response alters the expression of genes involved with processes such as inflammation, programmed cell death and how the body handles free radicals – molecules produced by normal metabolism that, if not appropriately neutralized, can damage cells and tissues. To validate those results, both phases were repeated in 6 different relaxation response practitioners and 5 non-practitioners, resulting in significantly similar changes in gene expression."

Interestingly enough, it did not matter which modality the person used. Some prayed, some meditated, some did yoga or chi gung, but whatever they did to elicit the Relaxation Response, their body was positively affected. Relaxation is one the key parts of medicine!

Kundalini Reiki II Attunement

I had my Kundalini Reiki II attunement about 90 minutes ago. This was very interesting...

So I sat comfortably in a chair with my feet on the ground, my palms open, my eyes closed around 12:58pm (attunement scheduled for 1pm) and after a few moments I started to feel my hands heat up and then my head started to ache right between my eyes (this attunement is said to open the third eye chakra) with lots of flashing colors. Then I noticed my arms moving, kind of jumping around.

This is when my dog Smiley started to freak. She was just hanging out on her rug in the room near me and all of a sudden I heard her sit up and then she started to whine the way she does when someone new is around. Then I felt her come over to me, stick her nose in my left hand and then my right hand, and then she sat back down and was fine.

Meanwhile, I started to feel some interesting energy at my hara or root chakra coming up to my diaphragm. When I opened my eyes about 15 minutes had passed.

I then proceeded to do the Kundalini Reiki Meditation for about 4-5 minutes. Tomorrow I will send my first KR distance healing to Alice and get her feedback. I'll keep you posted!

More Reiki I Experiences

Today I felt great--clear and energetic. I actually went to Yoga this morning and had a fabulous time. After yoga I came home, ate some fruit with plain yogurt, and decided to try the last two Reiki treatments that I am to complete before my Kundalini Reiki II attunement tomorrow afternoon-a Karmic Thread or relationship healing and a Situations healing (plus I did another self healing just because it seemed like a good idea).

Once again I felt the energy strongly in my hands and heart, the healings each took about 6 minutes, and it was very clear to me when they were over (the energy ebbed dramatically). I am interested to see what kind of life changes come about from this work. I'll keep you posted!

Kundalini Reiki I Attunement

Regular readers know that I decided to begin some Reiki CE with Alice Langholt. Today I had my first Kundalini Reiki Attunement at 11am and here is what I sent to Alice as feedback. Very interesting!

At 11 I sat down, feet grounded, palms open, eyes closed. I soon felt major pulsing in my heart and hands. I also started to see globes of colors, from orange through deep royal blue. The energy would ebb and flow, ebb and flow, ebb and flow. After a while the energy ebbed and stayed back, and the globes of color slowly faded and stopped. When it felt complete I got up and about 26 minutes had passed (it felt like maybe 10).

Maybe 90 minutes later I sat and did my first self healing which took about 5 minutes and it was again clear to me when the direct healing time had stopped (the energy just ebbs).

I will do a the karmic band, location, and situations healings before Thursday at 1. I can't wait to continue to see how this unfolds.

Thanks Alice.

Reiki Training

I did it! I am now signed up for Reiki continuing education with Alice Langholt of the Reiki Awakening Blog. I will do both the new Kundalini Reiki Master Course and her Distance Reiki Tutorial.

Alice already sent me the Kundalini manual and we will work on scheduling attunements, etc. I am very excited as I haven't done any Reiki education in quite a while and I need to practice and learn to market my distance healing services for future on line work. I will keep you posted about the process!

Kundalini Reiki

I have been in touch with Alice Langholt of the Reiki Awakening blog about her latest work with Kundalini Reiki. I left a comment on her blog this morning and she very kindly emailed me a very in depth answer. So in depth, in fact, that I will most likely sign up for these attunements with her (thanks Alice!).

Basically, this form of Reiki is very strong but very fast and effective. It requires no longer than 5-15 minutes to transmit whether in person or via distance, comes through the earth so the source is unlimited and it doesn't drain you as a practitioner (although I find this true for Usui Reiki as well), and requires no special hand positions or symbols.

Feedback from Alice's clients is that even though she may only send the Reiki for 5 minutes, the recipient feels the energy flowing for an hour as in a traditional 60 minute session. I am very interested in this and wonder if any of you have tried this form of Reiki.

Reiki In Hospitals

We mostly picture hospital settings as cold and clinical - not necessarily places where holistic energy healing takes place. But many hospitals are embracing Reiki and Therapeutic Touch as adjunct healing modalities to assist patients in feeling and sleeping better.

Close to 12 years ago I had a total abdominal hysterectomy at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, and with the assistance of my surgeon, Dr. Paul Nyirjesy I was able to have close friends in pre-op and recovery performing energy healing. Plus I used healing meditation tapes while in surgery. I was home in 3 days and back in the studio within 4 weeks time. I believe the energy work helped.

I read a recent Washington Post article, "Reiki: Touching the Intangible" which profiles Reiki practitioner Luann Jacobs, who spends portions of her days practicing at George Washington University Hospital. The patients are more relaxed and sleep better after Reiki, which is nothing to sneeze at considering that rest is when healing takes place.

The Great American Think Out

If you are at all interested in beating stress, exploring meditation, and studying with some of the greatest minds of our time (including Gregg Braden, Baron Baptiste, Hal Dwoskin, and Judith Orloff) then I highly recommend signing on to The Great American Think Out.

Friends and writers Richard Aranow and Stephanie Gunning started to hatch the idea in 2006. "Through a series of conversations about the importance of raising consciousness on the planet, and a shared love of laughter and play, they decided to launch a project that would inspire and support other people, such as you, the reader, to give themselves the experience of peace and joyful living on a daily basis in whatever way appeals to those people. They believe that shifting our minds from fear-based thoughts to a sense of presence with whatever is happening in the moment opens us to creativity and connection. Also, if people were to experience such peace in a bold, communal way, all on one day, it would change the energy of the world, reduce stress and conflict, and improve relationships. They hope you will join with them in an exploration of the possibility this idea holds. It's the next great adventure."

Each day there is a short writing and usually a downloadable MP3 of an interview or a short meditation. I have really enjoyed the Think Out so far (I'm on Day 19) and highly recommend it!

Real Reiki Research

Dr. Ann Baldwin, a research professor of physiology at The University of Arizona College of Medicine who has been studying Reiki, or “universal energy healing,” has expanded her research to study the effects of Reiki on animals, specifically horses and dogs. Dr. Baldwin studies emotional and environmental stress, how it increases vulnerability to disease, and how its damaging effects might be neutralized.

She has published her observations in the current issue of International Therapist. According to the Imperial Valley News, "She has found that horses respond immediately to Reiki, even if it is given from a distance, by coming to the practitioner and sniffing the backs of his or her hands. The smell they notice seems to appear only when Reiki is given. She suggests that horses will allow Reiki to work on them to bring them back to balance, promoting natural healing, and that they will give the practitioner a sign, such as a nudge with the nose, when they have had enough, thus controlling how much they will take and under what circumstances. For both horses and dogs, Reiki produces profound relaxation. Horses respond with classic signs - licking and chewing, lowering the head, allowing the eyes to close. Dogs often sit or lie down, lower their heads and close their eyes."

As you may know even from watching The Dog Whisperer, horses and dogs respond very quickly to people's energy. They have a quick sense of who and what will harm them and what will help them and respond accordingly. In my opinion this makes the animal research all the more interesting and I hope that it will lead those who just ignore energy healing or dismiss it automatically to at least consider the fact that something is happening here!

Reiki for A Good Night's Sleep

I was drawn to an article entitled A Rested Development that showed up in my Reiki Google Alert today. In the midst of a good general article about getting better sleep, including the usual hints to relax before going to bed, only using the bedroom for sleep and relaxation (not work), and avoiding caffeine close to bedtime, is a section devoted to Reiki!

In an interview with Reiki Master Sherry Miller, she discusses how she was drawn to study Reiki due to her own insomnia. "'I was led down this path because I couldn't sleep,' she says. 'There were nights when I'd sleep only two hours.'

Through the practice of Reiki, which uses relaxation methods to calm the body and ease it more into a sleep phase, she was able to get the sleep she needed."

While I didn't start practicing reiki for insomnia (in fact most nights I fall asleep easily and sleep well for at least 7-8 hours) I find that on those occasions when I do have a problem falling asleep doing reiki on myself is one of the only things that helps me get there. Anyone who is attuned to Reiki I can do this themselves.

However, if you are not interested in learning Reiki but would like to try a treatment to see if it helps your sleep that is also a good idea. The two most often heard comments from my reiki clients are that they sleep better and have fewer headaches.
