Pilates, Exercise, Nutrition Paradigms

Google News strikes again--

One of the biggest problems we face in fitness & nutrition today is the focus on separate aspects. What do I mean? Well, everyone in fitness is worrying about body parts, cardio, heart rate, resistance, "core", flexibility, etc. And diet and nutrition has become a big science of supplements and weird food things--no carbs, no fats, no meat, no fish, high protein, glycemic index, etc.

I just got off the phone with Joan from PhysicalMind and we were discussing cosmetics and how all face creams and products are basically the same, no matter what they cost or who manufactures them. Yet this is a billion dollar business!

Remember when dieting simply meant watching how much food you actually put in your mouth? Or when exercising meant swimming, walking, boating, hiking, playing with your kids, and maybe doing some whole body stretching, yoga, or for those of us who knew about it, Pilates? If I hear one more person ask me if Pilates is core training I will throw up!

I get emails from people who have recently started exercising and somehow don't count the basketball or hockey or soccer that they play 3 night a week as exercise and feel compelled to do an hour on the treadmill in addition! So here is a refreshing rant on this topic from Amy Konig's blog, TRAUMDEUTUNG: Exercise and the Nutrition Paradigm

If you agree, or at least think this is interesting, leave a comment and let me know. For a refreshing look at Pilates and the history of Pilates as a business in the US written as a quick read chick lit novel try reading Joan's new book, The Body Biz.

Hi Linda~

I found your blog about a month ago and have been reading ever since. I am a certified pilates instructor in Pittsburgh, PA and have also been studying "natural health" for the last 12 years. I agree 110% with this post. I could talk about it for days. I have so many clients that have the most horrendous eating habits and expect the miracle work to be done in the studio. I make a lot of my own exfoliator at home with some good raw organic sugar, a bit of raw honey and some organic oil I have in my kitchen, sometimes grapeseed or olive or a blend of oils you can find in your natural health market in the body section. You will feel amazing after this great scrub and you can make a shower's worth for about .75cents. We have so much here on earth that we should be using to heal and maintain our bodies and no one wants to take the time to figure it out. If it wasn't here 200 years ago chances are you don't want to eat much of it. Hey I still need my cakes and cookies but moderation is key with just about everything, including working out. Our bodies are the most amazing pieces of equipment we have and most of us take better care of our cars than our bodies. My mom always said..."garbage in garbage out!! I am sure living on the beautiful island (always been a dream of mine) you have access to the most wonderful food and elements that you can make your own face cream with. If we could all have a bit of island life....Thank you for your post and thank you for reading my long possibly obnoxious comment. I just have a passion for this sort of thing. Just don't write a post about the pharmaceutical companies and you won't have another lengthy comment. Don't even get me started on that...Thanks again! Jrpakapie@hotmail.com

"most of us take better care of our cars than our bodies" is my favorite Joseph Pilates quote!
